In 1981 Ted Irwin designed and introduced the Citation 31, a high-performance family cruiser. Eighteen years of experience went into the design, the result is one of the best values available in her class. Recognized for her high-tech underbody, she quickly gained respect on the race course. However, the enduring success of the Citation 31 is her ability to cruise in comfort. The sailplan is simple yet powerful. Internal halyards and outhauls, mid boom sheeting, and boom vang tackle hint at the performance delivered by her high aspect ratio rig. Sails are easily managed as all halyards and sheets lead to the cockpit. Inboard chainplates and sheet tracks allow close sheeting for the genoa. The cockpit is designed to comfortably accommodate family or friends and features a steering station complete with all engine controls and a compass on the steering pedestal. A teak pedestal table and drink rack add to the convenience of entertaining on deck. Below the Citation 31 is enjoyable, attractive and easy to maintain. The galley is equipped with all the necessities to feed a hungry crew. The icebox has four inches of foam insulation to keep food cold during extended cruising. The LPG gimbaled stove and oven provide odorless, clean, trouble-free cooking. Cleanup is a snap with standard hot and cold pressure water in the galley. The private head has six feet of headroom and is nicely appointed with a pressure hot water shower, teak-trimmed mirror, and bountiful storage. The louvered teak door and opening port keep it bright and airy. The forward cabin can be closed off for privacy allowing comfortable sleeping accommodations for family or friends. Auxiliary power is supplied by a two-cylinder 15-horsepower diesel engine. Mounted on a molded fiberglass pan, the engine is freshwater cooled with a heat exchanger for hot water. Fuel capacity is approximately 31 gallons. The engine room is easily accessed from a cockpit hatch and inspection door below.
